There is no getting away from the fact that things like SEO, Google Ads, or Facebook advertising are by far and away the most effective and immediate way of marketing your website to potential customers. However, there are still other more traditional ways of getting your name out there.

The Need for Online Marketing
Many people misunderstand how a website works. They believe that after paying for a swanky and well-designed new website, they will suddenly be discovered by hundreds of new customers who find their website online. However, this is rarely the case.
There are specific steps you need to take for Google to start ranking your website, and even then, it can take weeks or months to get there.
Having a ‘brochure’ site of only 4-5 pages is unlikely to make any headway, and if you aren’t going to opt for SEO or any other online marketing, you will have to use other methods to get people to your website.
Nonetheless, that is not to say that your website is not an effective selling tool; you just need to make sure that people actually find it!
Become Active on Social Media
Social Media marketing is a controversial topic among internet marketers. While some people think it is vital, others believe it is a waste of time.
We are of the opinion that if you are not going to pursue things like SEO or Google/Facebook adverts then being active on Facebook is still more exposure than you would have otherwise. However, you need to be proactive about it.
For example, you need to appreciate that people are likely less interested in your business than you would like them to be! This changes from industry to industry (for example, people might be more likely to follow a bar rather than a debt management company), but usually, people need some motivation to interact with your company.
By running competitions, you can drive people to your website. You will be amazed how many people will like and share your site or page for something as simple as a free meal for two, or perhaps a product that you sell or provide.
Getting the Address Out There
If people aren’t going to find your website “organically” on Google or another search engine, then you need to let people know where to go. This means putting the address of your site on all of your stationery, menus, bags, essentially anything where it can reasonably go.
Sometimes going back to basics is not a bad idea. Leaflets and flyers are a fantastic way of getting your business and some information about it out there, so why not use it to advertise your website?
It is not at all expensive to get several thousand leaflets printed which can go a very far way. In fact, you can get around 5000 printed for under £100. The question then is what do you do with them?
Naturally, they need to be distributed. If you have a smaller local business, then the best idea is to spread them around the area. One option is to go door-to-door putting your business details through letterboxes.
Many companies will take over these distribution duties themselves, although do your research and make sure they are reputable. It is not unheard of for these companies to cut corners and just take a big pile of leaflets home rather than getting them where they need to go! It is perhaps a better idea to do it yourself, or to pay someone you trust to take up the responsibility!
It is also a good idea to stick a leaflet or flyer in the bag of every customer who passes through or leaving businesses cards in prominent places for them to take. This will encourage repeat business and make sure people are exposed to your website.
Finally, leave a pile of leaflets wherever it is appropriate. For example, leave them in local cafes and such that allow for that kind of advertising.

As you can see, there is no miraculous tactic that will suddenly expose your website to the thousands of potential customers you had hoped for without carrying out online marketing.
If everyone else is playing the game, even those doing it poorly will still at least be involved. There are other techniques of increasing exposure, as we mentioned in this blog post, but they can only take you so far; they will never get you the customers that ranking highly on Google will.
