Blogging is a crucial tool when you want to take your website from doing the job to really excelling. Not only does it look good for customers browsing your site, but Google will look favourably on your site when it screens your website and sees new content.
However, throwing up any old content won’t quite do. A couple hundred words every couple of months is of no use to anyone, and certainly won’t impress the scanning robots of Google. In this blog, we will answer a few questions which we are asked a lot. By taking our tips and information into consideration, you can make sure your blog becomes a very practical marketing tool!
What Should I Blog About?
The beauty of blogging is how easy it is to create content for it. You can write about a multitude of things including:
- News about your business.
- Online Guides
- Information on your industry.
- Announcements of competitions.
- Deals and offers you will be offering.
For example, if you were offering a discount off of a product that you provide, you might want to outline the deal as well as the product itself. If you bake and sell cupcakes, you might want to offer a guide on how your customers can bake at home themselves. If you work as a financial adviser, you might want to discuss changes in rules or regulations about your industry.
As you can see, the scope of what you can cover is incredibly broad so don’t feel you have to limit yourself!
How Often Should I Blog?
Our clients often ask us how regularly they should be blogging. There is a simple answer; as much as possible!
However, for a lot of small businesses, this is much easier said than done. You don’t always have the time to set aside to blog consistently, and for people who don’t spend a lot of time writing it can be quite a time-consuming process.
With this in mind, we would recommend that you blog at least once a week. Taking an hour or two to write 500-750 words is absolutely a worthwhile investment, and over the course of a week, you should be able to think of something to write about!
Should I Add Pictures?
Yes, absolutely, so long as they are good quality.
When it comes to pictures, there are a few steps you can take to make sure that your pictures look and behave professionally. Firstly, you can find high-quality stock images online on various stock photo websites. Alternatively, you can use a good camera or particularly new mobile phone camera to take your own photos.
However, your work isn’t quite done yet. Once you have your photo, you first have to make sure it is the right size. For most blog posts, setting it at 700 pixels wide will make it the right size. You can do this using Photoshop or the free alternative photo editor GIMP.
Once you have your correctly sized photo, you can go to the final stage. In order to make sure your website loads quickly (if a website takes over three seconds to load, the majority of users will abandon it altogether), you need make sure there is nothing too cumbersome for the visitor’s browser to handle.
In order to achieve this, take a visit to tiny PNG. This ingenious website will shrink the file size of your photo without affecting the image quality. It seems like magic but trust us; it isn’t!
What About Videos?
Videos are also a fantastic idea. This kind of rich media is not only impressive and interactive for potential customers, but it is also looked very favourably upon by Google.
Your videos can cover almost anything, and it doesn’t have to be footage of yourself. Whatever the content, don’t just include them for the sake of it; make sure they are of some value.
The best way of including a video is to upload it to YouTube and then to embed it within your web page. There are countless guides on how to do this on the video, and it only takes a few minutes; give it a go!
Do I Need to Be Consistent?
To be honest, no one has actually asked this question. However, we feel it is still important to cover. There is very little on a website that looks worse than an abandoned blog. If you think you might end up just posting every few months, or abandoning it altogether, then don’t bother doing at all.
Not only does it look bad to your customers, but it also looks bad to Google as your website will be stagnant.
If you are going to start a blog, keep it up!
