I Have a New Website, Why am I Not Ranking?

Many people assume that by getting online, they will appear at the top of the Google search rankings. However, this is rarely the case, and often it takes a substantial amount of work to have your business competing on Google.

Three Reasons Ranking on Google Isn’t Easy

Here are three reasons as to why ranking on Google is difficult:

  • There is a lot of competition.
  • Your site is too new.
  • Your website is too ‘small’.

Firstly, keep in mind that there is a lot of competition in business and online. If you are in recruitment, for example, you are going to be competing with hundreds of different businesses around Scotland for the top places on Google’s rankings.

The thing is that a lot of these companies will be spending hundreds or thousands of pounds on negotiating the Google algorithm in order to boost their rankings. If you aren’t contributing anything, it is unlikely you’ll be found.

In short; unless you do something very niche or people search for your business name, it is unlikely that you will appear high up the rankings. SEO will be required to make sure you gain exposure.

Secondly, it may be the case that your site is too new. Google needs time to crawl your site in order to determine how much ‘authority’ your website has so that it can place it within its rankings.

Some people are frustrated that after getting their new site, they still cannot be found on Google, even when searching for your exact business name. This is typically nothing to worry about, in a matter of hours or a few days Google will have scanned the site and you will appear!

Lastly, some website are just too small to make any impact on search rankings. Again, Google is concerned about ‘authority’.

If you have a one or two-page website with very little content, it is unlikely that Google will pay much attention to your site when it comes to ranking sites it has registered. If you offer debt advice, for example, Google knows there isn’t much room for helpful information for its searchers.

However, a massive website with extensive content on each and every page loaded with relevant keywords is going to make an impact. These sites should rank reasonably well, although there are many other tactics involved in competitive industries.

Promoting Your Site Without SEO

Many people don’t have the budget for SEO, which is perfectly understandable. Some industries are so competitive that it will cost several thousand pounds every month to make sure that they are at the top. However, there are other options.

Facebook and Google advertisements are one good option that works for all budgets. Both companies have fantastic systems which are relatively easy to use, and you can use your knowledge of your demographic to release very targeted advertisements.

Another option is to spread the word about your new site manually. You can do this in a number of different ways, but good old fashioned physical marketing through leaflets, flyers, and business cards.

Finally, if you have a social media following, you can share your new site regularly on there encouraging people to click through to visit the site. Whatever tactic you employ, stick at it; remember that a website doesn’t just magically bring you business, it takes work!
