Why Setting Business Goals is Essential in 2024

After a fantastic festive break, the Soapbox team are back in the studio and ready to tackle 2024 head on.

It’s planning week here at Soapbox, and we have been setting our company targets for the year ahead, ensuring we know exactly where we are going, and how we are going to get there.

The words ‘business planning’ might not exactly fill you with excitement, but they should. After all, they are your stepping stones to success and your key to a record-breaking year to come.

The truth is that all successful businesses set targets, and the most successful are often those who have the most effective planning process in the first place.

Forget New Year’s resolutions. Business goals aren’t pie in the sky ideas that will be a distant memory in a couple of weeks. They are your map for the year ahead and will inform every single business decision you make over the next 12 months.

What Should Your Business Goals Be?

You know this a lot better than us! What is your end goal for your company this year? Where do you want to be in 12-month’s time?

Got an answer to these questions? Great! That’s your long-term goals sorted. Now its time to set some shorter-term goals along the way to keep everyone motivated and you are well on your way to a fabulous business strategy.

If you made business goals last year, analysing them should be a major part of your future planning process. Achieve them all by the time summer rolled around? It’s time to be a bit more ambitious. Fall well short of your goals but still had a good year business wise? Let’s set some more realistic goals this time around.

One of the biggest mistakes businesses make in the planning process is choosing goals that are vague or unobtainable. “I want to make profit this year”. Great, us too, but how much, and how are you going to do it?

Your business goals should be ambitious, just about achievable, and identified based on solid facts, figures, and past experiences, and not your wildest hopes and dreams.

S.M.A.R.T Goal Setting

One of the most popular business goal setting processes is rather aptly known as S.M.A.R.T.

According to the S.M.A.R.T goal setting procedure, all goals should be:

S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Attainable
R – Realistic
T – Time Sensitive

Compare your business goals to this list. If they meet all the S.M.A.R.T criteria, congratulations! If not, maybe it’s time for a bit of a rethink.

Trust us, we know how busy the first few weeks of the year can be, but taking the time to sit down and plan properly really is essential if you want to be successful in the year to come.

What About Individual Goals?

So, you have had a senior management meeting and agreed on your overall business goals for the year ahead. Job done right? Not quite.

Umbrella objectives are a great starting point, but the magic really starts to happen when each individual employee and department have established their own goals and targets as well.

These goals should be tailored specifically to their role within the business, whilst also having a direct correlation to overall business success.

These goals not only help focus your team and ensures they are motivated for the year ahead, but also provide you with clear performance indicators to measure productivity and performance.

Every single person in your team focussing their efforts on achievable yet ambitious individual objectives all contributing to overall business success? Wow! Sounds like you are in for a very happy new year indeed.

I had the pleasure of working with Soapbox Digital Media to design a website for my restaurant, Pendulum. I was impressed with their professionalism, responsiveness, and attention to detail. The end result was a beautiful website that has received positive feedback from customers. I highly recommend Soapbox Digital Media for anyone looking for high-quality web design services, especially if you’re a restaurant owner like myself.

We’ve received countless compliments about how professional and user friendly our website is. We’ve since been in contact with Liam who has created guides for us to be able to update the website ourselves as well as expand and develop the website as we grow as a company. It has been a very smooth and effortless collaboration with Soapbox and has given us a brilliant website which has increased our sales. We look forward to continuing to work with them in future as we grow and expand.
