How Long Does Printing Take?

How Long Does Printing Take

Printing turnaround can range from a few hours to one week or more, and the timeline depends on what you’re printing, the quantity, whether your artwork is ready, and whether you’re collecting locally or waiting for delivery.

For standard print products at your local Glasgow printer Soapbox Digital Media, same-day turnaround is possible when files are confirmed and you can collect in person.

For jobs that need to be printed and shipped to a specific address, the full timeline combines production days and delivery days, and suppliers don’t always present both figures clearly in their quotes.

What affects how long your print job takes

The print product itself

Flat prints like flyers and business cards move through production quickly, while finishing processes like folding, binding, stapling, and lamination each add time before the job is ready to collect or dispatch.

Quantity and printing method

Digital printing doesn’t need setup plates, so short runs of 50 to 500 copies can often be ready within the same working day.

Very large quantities sometimes switch to offset printing, which needs press setup time regardless of final run length and adds at least half a working day to the schedule.

Artwork readiness

How ready the artwork is can shift the timeline by a day or two.

A file that needs resizing, colour correction, resolution changes, or a full design stage before it can print delays the whole job.

Collection versus delivery

Online printers add delivery on top of production time, and the two figures aren’t always shown together. A Friday order with a 24-hour production guarantee won’t arrive until Monday at the earliest, and that assumes a postal service or courier has already collected from the print facility before their cut-off.

For urgent jobs where collection is possible, there’s no postal timeline to factor in.

Call to confirm availability and you’ll get accurate and up-to-date information on a collection time, with an accurate delivery estimate rather than a window that shifts based on carrier volume.

How to get your order done faster

Get artwork ready before you order

A PDF at 300dpi in CMYK with correct bleed goes to press immediately, but if your file needs corrections or isn’t sized right for the product you’re ordering, it can add time to your order.

Our design and print service covers both artwork and production in the same workflow, so if your files aren’t ready, we can handle the design and get it to press the same day when orders come in before our cut-off.

Know the cut-off time

At Soapbox, the morning cut-off is the dividing line for same-day collection. If you just missed the mark, we will always try our best to help! But we can’t guarantee you will get it the same-day.

Thankfully, with our next day collection service, your order will be quickly in your hands!

Give our friendly team a call today and we will let you know if we can help.

Choose standard sizes

Standard sizes like A5 flyers, A6 postcards, and common business card formats are in constant production rotation.

Custom sizes need a separate press setup, so confirm dimensions when you call rather than leaving it to checkout. A non-standard size will need its own quote, and that process adds lead time before production can start.

Frequently asked questions about printing times

How fast can a printer print?

Commercial digital presses output hundreds of A4 sheets per minute. The time in a commercial print workflow comes from setup, quality checking, cutting, and finishing rather than from the press itself. For a short run of 250 business cards, setup and finishing take longer to complete than the actual print run.

Why does it take 10 minutes for my printer to print?

Home and office printers process files internally before starting, which takes time depending on file complexity. Ink-based printers also need drying time between passes, and lower-cost models have smaller print buffers that can’t hold a full document in memory at once. Commercial presses use a separate RIP (raster image processor) to prepare files before the job reaches the print engine. RIP pre-processing happens off the press, so by the time the job is queued, the machine is ready to run immediately rather than working through the file in real time.
