Ultimate Guide to On-page SEO

There are all sorts of advanced tips and tricks in the world of SEO, but without getting the fundamentals right you are never going to see the success your business deserves.

On-page SEO

Good on-page SEO is the epitome of ‘setting yourself up for success’ reassuring Google you are an expert in your field and and encouraging them to put your website right at the top of the search engine results.

We don’t need to tell you what a boost that would be for your business!

Why does my business need on-page SEO Glasgow?

The better your on-page SEO is, the more relevant your content is to your chosen topic in the eyes of Google and other search engines.

The more relevant your content is in the eyes of Google, the more likely it is that they will put your page at the very top of the search rankings in your niche.

It really is as simply as that.

Do I Need A Website For My Business

Done properly, on-page SEO can….

  • Improve search engine performance
  • Increase conversion rates
  • Build credibility in your niche
  • Improve the user experience
  • Make your site more accessible

On-Page SEO is only one aspect of SEO, but it has been proven time and time again to be the most important, and succeeding online is almost impossible without it.

On-page SEO can take many forms, from the alt text on your images to the keywords you use in your content and even the hierarchy of your title tags.

All of them matter and all of them contribute towards that ‘topical relevance’ that Google is looking for.

On-Page SEO Services from Soapbox Digital Media

Soapbox Digital Media are trusted by businesses across Scotland to help them thrive online.

Real Business Growth

From accountants to architects, we help local businesses of all shapes and sizes to grow their online presence and have had the privilege of joining some of the nation’s most successful companies on their journeys from acorn to oak tree.

This is no fluke, it is the product of careful planning, experience, and leaving no stone unturned.

No matter the niche or needs of the companies we work with, on-page SEO is a vital part of EVERY digital marketing strategy we create.

No other aspect of SEO has as much of a direct impact on search rankings and our comprehensive auditing and on-page optimisation services have delivered some remarkable results for our clients over the past 12 years.

Key Elements of On-Page SEO

We have a tried and tested process for increasing the rankability of webpages through the power of on-page SEO.

With the Google algorithm in a constant state of change, our services are constantly evolving and we stay fully up to date with the latest best practices so you don’t have to.

That said, there are a some things that just work and have proven incredibly effective in improving website performance time and time and time again over the years.

Page Structure

Without the right page structure, the best content in the world will be wasted on your website.

Page Structure

Title Tags

Your title tag is the first thing a potential customer sees when they come across your page on Google, so it is vitally important you get it right. It is also an important ranking factor and should be closely related to your target keyword, if not an exact match.

Heading Hierarchy

H1, H2, H3… Your H tags are like a contents page for every page on your website, telling Google exactly where to find the most important content on your page. Your H1 tag is the most important and should include the exact keyword you are looking to rank for in most cases. Your H2s should be sub-headings related to the main topic, your H3s sub-headings within each sub-topic and so on.

Meta Descriptions

Displayed below the title of your page in your Google listing, your meta description is your chance to entice potential users to click on your link.

Including target and related keywords here can be beneficial as Google will often highlight such text in bold, attracting the eye and increasing the chance of a click.

Content Optimisation

Content is king after all.

Like everything else on your page, your content needs to be optimised, but there is no one-size-fits-all solution and there are several factors which go into what your content should be, and how much there should be of it.

Word Count

Without written content on your webpage, it is INCREDIBLY unlikely that you will ever rank in your niche.

In fact, anything less than 300 words and you are going to struggle big time, but many search terms require significantly more than this if you wish to compete.

It is not unusual for all the top 10 results for a certain service or queries to have well in excess of 1000 words, and you will struggle to compete with anything less.

This isn’t because Google loves reading, but because it is unlikely that you will be able to match the topical expertise displayed by your competitors with a significantly shorter piece of content.

Keywords and keyword density

Whenever we optimise our own or our clients content, we use advanced competitor analysis software to identify the optimal number of words for a page depending on the key search term we are trying to rank for. We also identify the keywords that should be included (and the density of these keywords) and the questions that need to be answered within the text to display our expertise to the search engines.

Content in 2024 is not the same as it once was, and keyword ‘stuffing’ is now both ineffective and potentially dangerous if Google spots what you are doing.

Every single decision we make is data driven and informed by expert tools and analysis and we have seen remarkable results over the years simply be re-optimising existing content using this process.

Topical Authority

Once upon a time, having one well optimised page of content was enough to top the search results in many niches.

Unfortunately, this is no longer the case, and you need to work a little harder (or get us to do it!).

In order to help Google identify you as an expert in your field, and feel confident in recommending you to their users for your target keyword, you need to demonstrate something known as ‘topical authority’.

To build this authority you not only need to cover a subject in detail, but also need to cover all the related topics around the subject as well. We can help you identify exactly what pages you do and don’t need and create an internal linking strategy that will connect them together in a search engine friendly way.

Image Optimisation

Images are massive for users, breaking up unwieldy blocks of text, drawing the eye, and creating a positive first impression when they land on your website.

They are also important in the eyes of Google, who want to see that the images you use are  both relevant to the topic and helpful for the user.

Alt Tags

Alt tags are hugely beneficial for search engines and users alike. Not only are the a vital accessibility feature for the visually impaired but they also allow Google to fully recognise what your image shows.

Search engines understand a lot these days, but they still struggle with images sometimes and Alt Tags are by far the best way to help them along.

Image Names

If you didn’t have a name, it would be pretty difficult for people to identify you right?

The same is true for Google and image names. With AI detection, search engines are getting better at identifying shapes and objects, but why take they risk? Name your images properly and make sure there is no doubt over their relevance to your users.

Other SEO Services

On page SEO is important to helping both users and search engines understand your content.

However, it only covers a fraction of the potential ranking factors that Google looks at. Optimise a page that is set to No Index or can’t be crawled by Google and there will be absolutely no benefit to your business whatsoever.

Our success at Soapbox comes from our ability to build our clients a comprehensive SEO strategy that covers ALL of them, leaving no stone unturned in your fight for business supremacy.

Just some of the other SEO Services we provide include:

  • Outreach and digital PR – Positive press is never a bad thing for your company. By telling your stories to the all the right people, we can help you acquire invaluable links to your website that will maximise the value of every piece of coverage you receive.
  • Off-Page SEO – Building the RIGHT kind of backlinks is perhaps the single most effective way to increase your search engine performance. We specialise in acquiring safe high-quality links from relevant domains that will boost your web page authority without the risk of a fatal manual penalty.
  • Technical SEO – Page load speed, accessibility, crawlability, HTML, CSS, URLs, Robots.txt, structured data and more. All those things that go on behind the scenes to make your website tick can make or break your SEO strategy success. Our internal linking analysis will drive traffic to your money pages, ensuring every page you’re linking to and from is a data-driven decision.
  • SEO Audits – We will conduct a full analysis of your website using the very latest SEO tools, providing a extensive off-page and on-page SEO checklist for you to follow and improve the rankability of your site. We will also provide a full competitor analysis including a backlink gap analysis and content gap analysis.

I have worked with the guys at Soapbox for design and print through my other company, Colourfence, so when it came to launching Mangow there was only one place I was going for both my new website and print materials. Both the digital team and print team were excellent throughout the entire project and produced top quality products that I am absolutely delighted with. My business partner and I were kept involved during the whole process and any thoughts or ideas we had were taken on board, it was clear that they cared about the end product and how we felt. We highly recommend Soapbox, the finished product is outstanding and the customer service is fantastic. If you need a website or something designed and printed get in touch with them!
